What is a Midwife?
A midwife is a healthcare professional who has received specialized education and training to provide an array of women’s health services.
Many people think that midwives only provide patient care during childbirth. In fact, in addition to the expert labor and delivery services - our midwives also offer comprehensive gynecological care to women through every phase of their lives, such as:
- Gynecological examinations at annual visits
- Health screenings
- Family planning
- Reproductive counseling and management
- Contraceptive counseling and management
- Prenatal and pregnancy care
- Menopausal management and management
- Senior care
Midwives and Childbirth
For women having a low-risk, healthy pregnancy, midwives are an excellent option for providing expectant mothers with care before, during and after the birthing process.
Together with our midwives, you will receive careful consideration of:
- Your individual birthing goals
- Personal preferences for labor conditions and newborn care
- Medical needs for delivery and recovery, including requests for pain relief
Discussions of these topics happen early in your prenatal visits and help facilitate a satisfying and healthy pregnancy and delivery.
A Midwife's Approach
Our midwifery approach helps to prepare your mind and body for pregnancy and motherhood. We will help and encourage you to make healthy choices, as well as identify, monitor and manage any risk factors during your pregnancy and during your baby’s development.
After birth, midwives offer physical assessment and provide support and advice on breastfeeding, baby care, contraception, and other challenges you may be experiencing. Midwives will continue to see new mothers throughout a six-week postpartum period.
Throughout your care, our midwives are trained to recognize an urgent medical situation and can facilitate immediate access to our OBGYNs and physician specialists to address any unexpected or emerging medical needs. Our connection to Garnet Health Medical Center makes for a seamless transition of care.
