Kyphoplasty (Bone Deformity Surgery) at Garnet Health

Vertebral fractures can result from various health conditions — like osteoporosis, cancer or multiple myeloma — and should promptly be addressed with a kyphoplasty procedure. Kyphoplasty helps correct bone deformity and relieves pain that come with spinal compression fractures.  The experienced neurosurgeons at Garnet Health can perform this procedure for residents of Orange and Sullivan Counties at Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, NY.

Vertebral Fracture Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Symptoms

A vertebral fracture is a severe medical condition, but it doesn’t have many symptoms. They can include:

  • Sudden onset of back pain
  • An increase of pain intensity while standing or walking
  • A decrease in pain intensity while lying on the back
  • Limited spinal mobility
  • Potential lost height
  • A hunched-forward posture

Causes

Certain risk factors make people more likely to suffer a vertebral compression fracture. These include:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Menopause
  • Cancer patients

Additionally, people with healthy spines most commonly suffer a vertebral compression fracture through severe trauma, such as a car accident, sports injury or a hard fall.

Treatment

Garnet Health’s expert surgeons can treat a vertebral facture using kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses an inflatable bone tamp to help fractures heal. A special balloon is inserted and gently inflated inside the fractured vertebrae to restore height to the bone. Then, a special cement-like material is injected to help reduce deformity of the spine.

Performed as an outpatient procedure, kyphoplasty generally offers both pain relief and stabilization of the spine.

Garnet Health provides residents of Orange and Sullivan Counties with kyphoplasty procedures to relieve pain from vertebral fractures.
