Frequently Asked Questions

How Can Aromatherapy Help Patients?

Conducted in a quiet environment, the patient falls into a relaxed and meditative state as a trained nurse conducts an Aromatherapy session.  Patients sit or lie comfortably, full clothed. The practitioner uses a blend of natural oils and gently massages them into the patient’s skin, where they are absorbed by the body. The fragrances in the oils stimulate the nerves in the nose, sending impulses to the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion. As a result, the body is relaxed.

Why Should I Consider Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy has been known to relieve stress and stimulate the body to produce pain-fighting substances. It has also been used to help physical and mental health conditions, which may include infections, depression, insomnia and high blood pressure.

Is Aromatherapy Safe?

Aromatherapy is a safe, non-invasive relaxing technique performed by Garnet Health Medical Center’s experienced, trained nurses. As with any treatment, patients should not undergo Aromatherapy without first consulting a doctor. Pregnant women should not use aromatherapy, as some oils may cause uterine contractions.

Is Aromatherapy Available for All Patients?

Garnet Health Medical Center offers Aromatherapy to oncology patients who are 18 years of age and older.

How Will I Feel After an Aromatherapy Session?

There is some scientific data that supports the effectiveness of Aromatherapy, however each person will respond differently. Feelings can range from refreshed and relaxed to comfortable and stress free. Some healthcare professionals find it to be helpful in reducing stress and anxiety which in turn allows the body to heal more quickly.

What are the Benefits of Aromatherapy?

Patients in the hospital setting experience many stressors that can weaken the function of the immune system and interfere with healing. Aromatherapy focuses on relaxing the body, improving its ability to deal with stress and pain. Benefits of Aromatherapy include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Deep relaxation
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased blood flow throughout the body
  • Improved rate of tissue repair
  • Improved emotional well-being
