Parkinson’s Disease Rehab and Support
Parkinson’s disease is a long-term illness that affects the brain and makes movement harder to control. It happens because certain brain cells that help the body move smoothly stop working and die. By 2030, an estimated 1.2 million people in the U.S. will be living with Parkinson’s. In New York alone, about 65,000 individuals are affected.
At Garnet Health’s Callicoon location, specialized therapies are offered by skilled therapists, who can help patients with Parkinson’s maintain independence and improve their quality of life. These rehabilitation specialists understand the unique challenges Parkinson’s presents and work closely with each patient to develop a customized treatment plan that supports mobility, communication, and confidence. Therapies include:
- LSVT BIG – an evidence-based therapy program that focuses on making movements bigger and more purposeful to improve walking, balance, and daily activities. It retrains the brain and body through intensive, high-effort exercises to increase range of movement and make functional tasks safer and easier.
- PWR! (Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery) – an exercise-based approach to help people with Parkinson’s disease maintain and improve mobility, balance, posture, and overall function.
Both therapies address each individual’s needs while fulfilling the goal of improving flexibility, strength, and agility, key factors in slowing functional decline and supporting independence.
Other Specialized Therapy
- Lymphedema treatment – helps reduce abnormal swelling from lymphedema, a chronic condition that most commonly occurs after surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. Garnet Health’s Callicoon location is home to one of Sullivan County’s only certified lymphedema therapists.
