Bone Fracture Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Symptoms

There are numerous types of fractures, ranging from hairline fractures (a tiny crack in a bone) to compound fractures (where the bone tears through the skin, requiring emergency treatment). The symptoms of a fracture depend on the type of fracture present, but you can expect to experience:

• Pain
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Deformity
• Difficulty moving the affected bone

Causes

Fractures often result from heavy impacts, such as what you might experience during a fall or in a motor-vehicle accident. Repetitive motions also can lead to stress fractures, and osteoporosis can make bones more likely to break.

Treatment

Because bones generally heal naturally, treatment usually involves taking steps to encourage the healing process. In many cases, our providers at Garnet Health Doctors can treat fractures by realigning bone fragments and immobilizing the area with a cast. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary. During surgery, we insert plates, pins, rods or screws to secure the fragments in place. Many patients find that attending physical therapy helps them build up their strength and mobility once their injuries have healed.
