Garnet Health Doctors Welcomes Trauma Surgeon Douglas James

MIDDLETOWN, NY (Jan 20, 2026) — Garnet Health Doctors is pleased to welcome Douglas James, MD, who has rejoined the organization as a part-time surgeon.

Dr. James previously served as the Medical Director of the Trauma Department from July 2021 through August 2025, where he played a pivotal role in advancing trauma program operations, enhancing multidisciplinary communication and supporting the continual improvement of trauma care processes across Garnet Health Medical Center.

Dr. James is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, bringing specialized expertise in trauma, acute-care surgery and critical-care management. He completed his General Surgery Residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he distinguished himself through multiple teaching and clinical excellence awards. He went on to complete a Trauma Clinical Research Fellowship at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College.

Throughout his career, Dr. James has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to patient care, clinical research, resident education and collaborative quality initiatives. His work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, and he has also presented nationally on pediatric trauma, traumatic brain injury and injury disparities.

Dr. James will provide inpatient-trauma and acute-care surgery coverage exclusively at Garnet Health Medical Center. He will not maintain outpatient office hours.
