Measles: What You Need to Know
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- Airborne Spread: The virus can linger in the air and on surfaces for up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves an area.
- High Risk of Infection: Approximately 90% of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed to measles will become infected.
What are the Symptoms?
Measles often starts with symptoms similar to a cold:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
A rash typically appears 3–5 days after the first symptoms, beginning on the face and then spreading to the rest of the body.
Important: Don’t Show Up Unannounced if You Have Symptoms
If you suspect you or a loved one has measles:
- DO NOT walk into a doctor’s office, urgent care, or emergency room without calling first.
- This helps protect others, especially babies, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.
- CALL AHEAD: Contact your healthcare provider, emergency room, or urgent care before arriving.
- They will give you instructions on what to do next to prevent exposing others.
- When you arrive:
- Wait at the entrance.
- Wear a surgical mask (if you have one; staff will provide one if needed).
- A staff member will meet you and escort you to a private room for evaluation.
