What Is Gynecologic Cancer?

Gynecologic cancer develops in a woman’s reproductive organs. Named for the part of the body where the malignancy originated, the main types of gynecologic cancer are cervical, ovarian, uterine (endometrial), vaginal and vulvar cancer. Each type is unique, with different symptoms, risk factors, prevention strategies and treatment options.

Gynecologic Cancer Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Symptoms

Some general signs of gynecologic cancer include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Urinary urgency or frequency
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness

In addition to these general symptoms, there are more specific symptoms related to ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, vulvar cancer and vaginal cancer.
If you experience unusual symptoms for more than a month, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. It’s also important to see your gynecologist regularly for routine exams, such as a Pap test, even if you do not have symptoms.

Causes

The causes of gynecological cancer are unknown. All women are at risk, and the risk increases with age. Researchers have identified several other factors that can increase the onset of gynecologic cancer, including:

  • A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
  • A human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
  • Long-term use of oral contraceptives
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Estrogen therapy
  • A family history of gynecologic or breast cancer

Treatment

Your optimal approach to gynecological cancer can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the type and stage of your cancer as well as your age and preferences. In many cases, the first step involves surgery to remove the tumor, which may be supplemented with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Working together, the experienced surgical oncologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists at Garnet Health will ensure that you receive complete, compassionate care.
